Lactose, lactulose, and glucose breath tests

Medical servicesLactose, lactulose, and glucose breath tests

Lactose breath test

This test helps diagnose lactose intolerance by measuring hydrogen in your breath after consuming a lactose solution. Lactose intolerance can cause symptoms like bloating, diarrhea, and gas after consuming dairy products.

What to Expect

Preparation
You’ll fast overnight.
During the Test
You’ll drink a lactose solution, and your breath will be sampled at regular intervals to measure hydrogen levels.
After the Test
Results will show if you have difficulty digesting lactose.

Lactulose breath test

This test helps diagnose small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) by measuring hydrogen and methane in your breath after consuming a lactulose solution. SIBO can cause symptoms like bloating, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

What to Expect

Preparation
Similar to the lactose breath test, you’ll fast overnight.
During the Test
You’ll drink a lactulose solution, and your breath will be sampled over a few hours.
After the Test
Results will indicate if there is an overgrowth of bacteria in your small intestine.

Glucose breath test

Similar to the lactulose breath test, this test also helps diagnose SIBO but uses a glucose solution instead. It measures hydrogen and methane levels to determine bacterial overgrowth.

What to Expect

Preparation
You’ll fast overnight.
During the Test
You’ll drink a glucose solution, and your breath will be sampled over a few hours.
After the Test
Results will show if there is an overgrowth of bacteria in your small intestine.

FibroScan

FibroScan is a non-invasive test that measures the stiffness of your liver to assess liver fibrosis and fatty liver disease. It helps diagnose conditions like cirrhosis and can monitor liver health over time.

What to Expect

Preparation
Usually, no special preparation is needed.
During the Test
You’ll lie on your back with your right arm raised behind your head. A gel is applied to your skin, and a small device is placed against your liver area to measure stiffness. The procedure is painless and takes about 10 minutes.
After the Test
You can resume normal activities immediately.
